ÇEDBİK Sustainability Idea Competition - 2022

ÇEDBİK

SUSTAINABILITY IDEA COMPETITION

“Green Exhibition Pavilion Design”

2022

PURPOSE OF THE COMPETITION

Man-made interventions, which increased significantly with the industrial revolution, changed the carbon cycle of our planet and brought the climate crisis to the agenda in the period we live in. While each building we build in the construction sector, which is responsible for a significant part of the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, increases this emission, the existing buildings become a part of this cycle with their energy use. The high level of greenhouse gas emissions caused by construction necessitates the sector to do its part urgently. In this context, we need to question our standardized production methods, the building materials we use, that is, almost every subject that has become a habit.

The subject of the competition, which is the second of the ÇEDBİK Sustainability Ideas Competition, is the Design of the Green Exhibition Pavilion, organized with the theme of innovative steps in sustainability. It is planned that the selected designs will be exhibited in a virtual environment at the first stage, these structures will be built in the following stages, and they will be reconstructed in different cities and points with a traveling exhibition across the country.

SUBJECT OF THE COMPETITION

Environmentally friendly construction represents buildings that are environmentally friendly, economical and sensitive to healthy ecosystems, consisting of sustainable building materials with low environmental impact, suitable for the conditions specific to the nature of the building, oriented towards energy efficient and renewable resources. While the “Green Exhibition Pavilion Design”, which is envisaged to be designed in this context, takes us to the previous stage of building a building; It encourages questions such as “Is there really a need for the building to be built?”, “How is it possible to further transform an existing structure and adapt it to different climate zones?”.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

a) General Approach

- Integrated Design: All elements of the building and related disciplines support the main idea in harmony. Creating creative and innovative solutions through interdisciplinary interaction.

- Aesthetic Value: The aesthetic perception of the building consistently supports the main idea.

- Adaptability and Resilience: The capacity to adapt to the climate conditions and the increasing effects of the climate crisis, to survive and to fulfill its duties, which can survive in all 5 climate zones in Turkey's geography.

- Biodiversity, Ecosystem: Contributing to the biodiversity in the location where the building will be placed and supporting the development of the ecosystem

- Mobility/ Portability: High adaptive ability of the structure. It is expected that the dismantling and rebuilding scenario of the pavilion to be designed will also be included in the design. Alternative scenarios can be suggested.

- Public awareness effect: The building to be designed creates a public awareness about environmental awareness and construction

b) Material usage

- Visible, self-representational use of innovative and environmentally friendly materials

- More efficient use of existing materials in the market with different methods

- Suggesting innovative structural materials and systems

- Innovative, alternative use of the material; Upcycle, recycle, low carbon footprint and zero waste principles.

- Selecting materials that positively affect people and natural systems throughout their life cycle, covering pre- and post-construction processes

- Choosing energy efficient materials that support ecological and economic structure and contain environmentally friendly features

c) Meeting the Functional Requirements

- A clear usage area of at least 75 m2 that can allow for a closed or semi-open exhibition must be created within the competition area.
